St-Cergue - Culture et patrimoine
Attached to its traditions, the village of St-Cergue is passionate about perpetuating the authentic celebration of the désalpe, during which locals and visitors can enjoy watching the beautifully decorated herds as they pass by, browse round the artisan stalls and savour typical specialities.
In Switzerland, livestock spend the summer in the mountains and winter on the plains. These movements are an occasion for great traditional celebrations: the inalpe (when the animals go up to the mountain pastures) and the désalpe (when the herds come back to the plains for the winter). In the Vaudois Jura, above Nyon, St-Cergue perpetuates this tradition every autumn.
The procession of many beautifully decorated herds during this event testifies to the great passion the herdsmen have for their animals. Cows and other animals of the pastures pass through the village during the morning, to the sounds of bells and the alphorn. The celebration includes a variety of typical entertainment and a market where artisans from the region present their wares.
